About AK Wigg Public School

A. K. Wigg opened in 1955 with the original five classrooms across the front facing Haist St. In 1961 and again in 1964, two more classrooms were added to the school. Finally, in 1969 the addition of six classrooms, a library and a gymnasium, then called a gymnatorium, make A. K. Wigg as we know it today. The school is located within a residential and commercial zoning area, south of Canboro Road, east of Effingham, west of South Pelham Road. A. K. Wigg school has access to the Pelham Library, the Pelham Arena and Community Centre as well as the "Way To Grow" Day Care Centre located at A. K. Wigg School.

  • 5 primary classrooms
  • 4 junior classrooms
  • 3 intermediate classrooms
  • 2 Kindergarten classes

Communication

We have a variety of communication strategies in place.

Written

  • regular school Wakelet (monthly)
  • weekly Wildcat update
  • classroom newsletters/emails
  • notices/announcements about specific internal and/or external school events, as needed
  • progress and term reports
  • letters/notes written by teacher to discuss student’s progress and/or concerns

Telephone

Teachers, as well as parents and guardians, often find it more convenient to call each other. Please call the school, 905-892-2605, before school prior to 8:35 a.m. and after school after 2:55 p.m., if you wish to discuss a concern, or arrange for an appointment.

If you call at other times and the teacher you wish to speak with has prior commitments and cannot speak with you, we will be happy to take a message for the teacher to return your call.

Interviews

Formally scheduled interviews occur after Autumn progress reports have been sent home. As well, we encourage all parents to connect personally with their child’s teacher early in the school year. Sharing information about students’ abilities, strengths, interests and learning styles assists teachers with program planning and parents with understanding of how they can best support their child. It also helps both parents and teachers to develop a positive partnership early in the year that is essential for maximizing student learning.
